you get it done. and it hurts. some are addicted to the pain. the process may be painful, but it stands as a measure of strength. a tolerance of pain. resilience to life. the pain, you never forget.

and then it's completed. a mark forever on you. the healing process is delicate. it bleeds. and your friends clean away the blood. and put a thin layer of protection over the mark to help you sleep. eventually, it heals. and there remains, a beautiful design. that you chose. with an experience you will never forget.

it remains forever. you can add to it. you can choose a new one. but it stays as a reminder. of who you are. who you were. how you felt.
